From this MUST READ PIECE on Ashley Love’s blog, paraphrased:
Sandeen goes on a rant yet again that inaccurately paints an intersex and transsexual issue in a way that makes it about “gay issues”. there are a lot of GLB trans folk for whom same-sex marriage is an important issue, but I get a irritated when transgender issues get appropriated in order to support same-sex marriage…Nikki should be fully recognized as a woman, and her marriage should be recognized as a valid opposite sex marriage. Period.
It has become common for many transsexual advocates, allies and writers to protest Sandeen’s misrepresentation (many of whom Sandeen banned from commenting on the Pam’s House Blend site for thier truth telling) of many trans issues in a way that caters to Gay Inc, yet pigeonholes transsexual and intersex people who do not subscribe to Sandeen’s and Gay Inc’s transgender/3rd gender/crossdresser political strong arming of the medical condition transsexualism.
Apparently the marriages of transsexual, transgender & intersex (TTI) people aren’t a priority for the gay & lesbian organizations…It’s a disappointing slap in the face tp see all the gay groups being silent about this potentially historical case in Texas. Don’t heterosexual intersex and transsexual people also deserve advocacy from the LGBT leadership.
There is a difference, (equal, but different), between a woman with both intersex and transsexual birth challenges, and this social political term “transgender” that all of a sudden encompasses gender queer identified individuals, gay and lesbian gender non-conforming people, cross dressers, drag queens, etc.
Of course, if one is heterosexual they completely understand the above. On the other hand, if one is an advocate of the GLB and homosexual T, they are clueless. For example this comment by Dysonnance:
“Ashley has some issues with homosexuality and the gay movement.”
And, if there is any doubt whatsoever what Autumn Sandeen’s position is and why Sky wrote what she did as given on Ashley’s Blog, HERE is a comment Autumn made on the piece at PHB in direct rebuttal to Sky’s “appropriation” comment, which is directly above it:
“And if you read my post, I said “marriage equality,” not “same-sex marriage.”
“Marriage equality is currently an issue for trans people (and/or those who identify as women of transsexual history, classic transsexuals, or with Harry Benjamin Syndrome) because many people and some courts don’t consider post-operative trans people to be their target sex — so heterosexual marriges of trans people are not necessarily recognized as heterosexual marriages.”
Benign in itself, but just a few comments later, Autumn defines HERE exactly what she means when she says “marriage equality”:
“Marriage equality means that that not only lesbian, gay, and bisexual people should be able to marry the people who they love without the state interjecting themselves into the validity of their marriages, the same is equally true about trans people.”
Interesting. Huh? well, a rose by any other name…anyone keeping up with the GLB who doesn’t understand that the fight for marriage equality is the fight for same sex marriage is just plain dumb.
Some would think that the issue is just too complicated for the GLB and homosexual transgender to understand. others, myself included and obviously Sky as well, damn well know the GLB and Homosexual T understand completely; they will do whatever is necessary to appropriate and exploit the marriage rights and issues of post op transsexuals into their same-sex marriage agenda…or marriage equality agenda, if that’s a more palatable term to their sensibilities if it happens to further dilute the rights of heterosexual post op transsexuals that’s collateral damage the GLBT is simply not going to be concerned with. and make no mistake about it. The GLBT marriage equality advocates absolutely know that heterosexual post op TSs who are married have no desire to be captured under any banner whatsoever that defines their marriage as anything but that between a man and women. we are women. we are not transsexual women.
Now, when we take the position above, then people like Dysonnance and others in the GLB and Homosexual T do what they absolutely always do…they pull the homophobe card like sword and say we have issues. They know different, but it’s the only card they can play, failing to acknowledge that many of us who are heterosexual have no problems supporting gay rights…but we are not gay, just as they are not heterosexual.
As an interesting side note, I’ve always found it funny that the GLBT has no qualms at all stating that the majority of America are denying them their just reward. That’s probably true. but, on the same token, the GLBT majority – that same group that has appropriated heterosexual post op transsexuals – has absolutely no problem in the least denying us ours.
I’ve mentioned before that I live in the general area that the Nikki Araguz case is taking place. I’ve followed this story since it first broke. I may have missed a news piece or video but it’s not because I haven’t attempted to follow each one. Nikki’s position is simple: she is a woman – NOT a transgender woman; she was in a legal heterosexual marriage – NOT in a same sex marriage. I’ve heard her say that on videos and seen her quoted on many, many news articles; that is her position. what has me puzzled is that it now appears that she is surrounded by the local transgender community. They are in the court room with her. They attend the news conferences with her. Considering the transgender creed, i.e., genitals don’t define sex, I just can’t see how such an association with the local transgender community will help her case. I’ve always felt that society is not quite as dumb as they seem…they soak up all those interviews on Larry King, Ophra, YouTube when the TGs say that genitals don’t define who I am. Au Contraire, mon ami…very much so, they do define your sex and gender.
Having watched the local news coverage, another thing I don’t see is overwhelming bigotry. The preliminary facts that are pertinent seem to have been reported pretty well. I realize that some of the facts presented by the opposing lawyers and legal analysts have errors, but the MSM seem to be simply reporting what they here from all sides.
To me, this case is going to come down to one central issue: were Nikki and Thomas legally married in the State of Texas. and, again, to me, that is going to hinge on whether she had a valid birth certificate prior to the marriage that satisfied the Texas Family Code as it’s now written. to me, if she does have those credentials she has a chance at least, if she doesn’t…then sadly and unfortunately, not so much of one I think. Nikki and Thomas were married before the current Texas Family Code was written…how much that will effect the outcome I have no idea. Whether Thomas knew or not before they got married is totally irrelevant to me and if I were on the jury it would have no bearing at all…to the average citizen, however, it might.
Regardless, since my last post on this case, the story has exploded and the vultures are circling…scavenging for anything they can exploit out of this. The advocates are predictably not taking the approach on the internet that Nikki was simply a female and thus had every right to enter into a heterosexual marriage. instead, their position is that Nikki was a transgender female and should have the right to marriage equality.
I wonder if that’s good enough for Nikki?
And, just one last thing with regard to appropriation. In Autumn’s piece at PHB, in the very last sentence she says:
“…marriage equality is still a very trans issue.”
Perhaps if one is trans, then maybe she is right. but, in rebuttal, I don’t think it could be put any better than Ashley said it:
“The high majority of intersex people are not even remotely transgender (intersex people are of a biological condition, not an “identity or expression”), and neither do a lot of transsexual people…”
I’ve said it before, GLB and homosexual T advocates…leave heterosexual post ops out of you same-sex marriage equality efforts. we do not want your advocacy.
